Details

Cross-reactive Carbohydrate Determinants (CCD) are oligosaccharide structures which are attached to glycoproteins via a hydroxyl-group (O-glycan) or an amino-group (N-glycan). Those glycan chains have been identified in pollens of many different plant families. N-glycan are very immunogenic and can stimulate the production of IgE in sensitized sera. However, those anti-CCD IgE antibodies do not elicitate any allergic responses, rendering them clinically irrelevant.
In extract-based in vitro allergy diagnostics, the occurrence of these IgE antibodies hinders the interpretation of positive results, since it is not possible to distinguish between reactions due to antibodies against peptidic epitopes, anti-CCD IgE antibodies, or both antibody types to pollen extracts. Therefore, accurate and precise diagnosis based on positive results of pollen sensitizations can only be achieved by suppressing the binding of specific IgE antibodies to CCD.
